Members of a cricket club in Redditch are set to walk more than 28 miles in support of Alexandra Hospital's chemotherapy unit.

Cookhill Cricket Club is organising the charity walk from Edgbaston Stadium to New Road in Worcester to raise vital funds for the Garden Suite.

The unit has been treating Vicky Beech, the partner of cricket club player Mark Richardson, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021.

Ms Beech has been attending the Garden Suite for the past 17 months with the cricket club and wider community now wanting to give back for all the support the unit offers to patients and their families.

Ms Beech said: "I was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago and have been going to the garden suite for 17 months now and the work the staff do there is amazing.

"They always put patients at ease. Walking through the doors is such a daunting experience but all the staff give their all for you. From a shoulder to cry on and an ear to moan to through to giving you your treatment."

The club has set up a fundraising page with the aim of raising £1,000 for the Garden Suite ahead of the 12-hour walk on Saturday, March 9.

The figure has already reached £900 with the players pledging to walk in full cricket whites if the target is hit.

Fundraising coordinator at Cookhill Cricket Club, Lewis Horton, said: "Cookhill CC really is a community-driven cricket club. We welcome as many people as we can to get involved with the club.

"At the same time, we want to give back to the local community that supports us by doing something that we enjoy and the Alexandra Hospital has helped many players and their immediate family and friends through the years.

"Just recently, they have been particularly supportive of Mark and Vicky and we wanted to make sure that they knew that it wasn't just appreciated by them, but by everyone who knows them as well.

"Vicky is determined to take part in the walk even though she is still undertaking some treatment and is out doing practice walks regularly to give her the confidence to do this."

Ms Beech added: "Chemotherapy is such a difficult thing to go through, without the support from everyone at the garden suite it would be a very different and much harder thing to go through. I honestly can’t praise the staff enough. So please help by donating every pound will help. Thank you."
