Members of a cricket club in Redditch have walked for more than 11 hours in support of Alexandra Hospital's chemotherapy unit.

Cookhill Cricket Club walked 28 miles from Edgbaston Stadium to New Road in Worcester to raise vital funds for the Garden Suite.

The unit has been treating Vicky Beech, the partner of cricket club player Mark Richardson, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021.

A total of 15 members took part in the challenge with 10 finishing the full walk and everyone completing at least 14 miles.

This included Ms Beech who walked more than 20 miles despite still being part way through her treatment.

Senior Player for Cookhill Cricket Club, Andy Leigh, said: "For someone who has done his fair share of challenges over the years, this was one of the most rewarding and surprisingly hard work.

"I really enjoyed the company as I was with a fantastic group from the urban centre of Birmingham to the idyllic paths along the Worcester canal system.

"I am thrilled to raise so much for a truly wonderful cause. I think we should all be in awe of Vicky and the incredible effort she put in. She is honestly an inspiration to us all."

Ms Beech has been attending the Garden Suite for the past 17 months with the cricket club and wider community wanting to give back for all the support the unit offers to patients and their families.

The team managed to raise more than £2,300 which will be split 80/20 between the hospital ward and Cookhill Cricket Club.

Ms Beech said: "I was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago and have been going to the garden suite for 17 months now and the work the staff do there is amazing.

"They always put patients at ease. Walking through the doors is such a daunting experience but all the staff give their all for you. From a shoulder to cry on and an ear to moan to through to giving you your treatment."

Player Ben Smith added: "It was a tough day but it was a great cause that we were trying to raise money for. My legs and back were certainly feeling it for the next few days."
